Senior Credit and Collections Specialist
Responsibilities:
• Assess customer creditworthiness by reviewing applications, financial records, trade feedback, payment patterns, and external credit data to support informed recommendations on limits and terms.
• Oversee account risk by monitoring exposure levels, delinquency trends, hold activity, and other indicators that may affect payment performance or financial risk.
• Lead collection efforts for assigned accounts by following up on outstanding balances, documenting commitments, managing disputes, and escalating unresolved items when necessary.
• Reconcile customer accounts and investigate payment variances such as unapplied cash, partial remittances, overpayments, credits, and invoice mismatches.
• Examine deductions, chargebacks, rebate claims, pricing discrepancies, freight issues, returns, and other debit memos to determine validity and financial impact.
• Collaborate with Sales, Finance, Customer Service, Logistics, Pricing, and Operations teams to resolve credit issues, remove shipment barriers when appropriate, and address root causes behind recurring deductions or disputes.
• Maintain complete and accurate account records, including credit documentation, tax certificates, correspondence notes, and supporting backup for audit and compliance purposes.
• Prepare reporting on receivables aging, collection progress, deduction status, disputed balances, and higher-risk accounts, while contributing to month-end close activities and reserve analysis.
• Recommend next-step actions for problem accounts, including revised payment terms, credit holds, payment arrangements, write-offs, third-party recovery, or legal review based on business needs and risk exposure.
• Identify inefficiencies affecting collections, dispute resolution, or account accuracy and propose practical improvements while serving as a senior resource to less experienced team members.
Qualifications:
• 5+ years of experience in credit, collections, or accounts receivable within a commercial business environment.• Strong working knowledge of accounts receivable processes, commercial collections, cash application activity, aging analysis, and billing-related functions.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret financial information and evaluate customer risk using payment history, credit data, and supporting documentation.
• Experience handling deductions, short payments, chargebacks, account reconciliations, and dispute resolution with strong attention to detail.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to manage customer relationships professionally while protecting company interests.
• Proficiency in preparing reports, tracking account performance, and prioritizing collection activities based on aging and risk trends.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders to resolve issues, support timely shipments, and improve receivables outcomes.
