Accounting Director
Our client, a well-established higher education institution in the Northern Virginia area, is seeking a Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting to lead key accounting operations and financial reporting activities. This position will oversee a small team and play a critical role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, strong internal controls, and effective financial management across the organization.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting leader who enjoys balancing technical accounting responsibilities with team leadership, process improvement, and strategic financial support.
Qualifications:
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including oversight of the general ledger and financial reporting processes.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and organizational regulations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close activities, including account reconciliations and financial statement preparation.
- Manage debt-related accounting activities, lease billing, and debt payment schedules.
- Oversee accounts payable operations and ensure adherence to budgetary controls and approval processes.
- Ensure timely completion of bank reconciliations and cash management reporting.
- Prepare and review management reports, financial statements, cash flow analyses, debt compliance reporting, and other ad hoc financial analyses.
- Coordinate tax filings, fixed asset accounting, and debt reporting requirements.
- Partner with leadership on financial initiatives, process improvements, and strategic projects.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or financial management experience.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience required.
- Experience within higher education, nonprofit, or similarly complex organizations is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting, and accounting operations.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with ERP systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with senior leadership.
- Proven ability to lead process improvements and drive results in a dynamic environment.

Compensation
