The Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within assigned discipline or area. Supervises and directs craft activities, General Foreman, and others as assigned. Ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors performance are in compliance with specifications and within schedules and budget. Responsible for controlling costs and maintaining profitability. Performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions. The Superintendent is most often assigned to the field construction organization in a supervisory capacity. Additionally, the duties of Superintendent will include but not limited to: safety, quality, notifying Project Manager of material and equipment needs, and working with Traylor’s QA/QC department in assuring all quality requirements are being met.
Traylor Industrial Construction is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment. As such, all team members will be required from time-to-time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of this job description and their normal work function.
Work Environment:
The normal work environment will be at an industrial construction facility where exposure to outdoor weather conditions is possible and where proper PPE is required for a variety of potential hazards.
Roles & Responsibilities:
*The roles and responsibilities of a Superintendent may include but are not limited to the following items.
*Effective use of verbal and written communication – good interpersonal skills.
*Work safely at all times and promote safety to others around you.
*Assist Foremen and General Foremen in maintaining a safe workplace.
*Possesses a strong working knowledge of and experience working with their specific craft in an industrial construction setting.
*Perform quality work as determined by the project specifications.
*Examine drawings and specifications for various work tasks and ensures current information is passed down to front line supervisors.
*Track project schedule and cost reports.
*Schedule crews according to available work packages for the project and all required equipment and materials necessary to complete the task.
*Plan sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers.
*Conduct regular inspections of craft work and quality as well as insure installation is per specification.
*Monitor timely delivery of necessary materials and schedules necessary equipment to assure continued productivity.
*Conduct regular safety meetings with craft employees addressing specific work areas and conditions that require attention stressing compliance with company and regulatory safety procedures.
*Coordinate with engineers, client/owner, inspectors, etc. to isolate problems regarding plant’s mechanical equipment and assists in developing solutions to these problems.
*Coordinates work activities and installations with other craft supervision to assure productivity and to eliminate conflicts in the field.
*Prioritize tasks according to job schedule.
*Participate fully in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.
*Ambassador for Traylor Industrial Construction to the client, other contractors, and the public.
Qualification Guidelines:
• Experience:
Experience in the industrial construction industry (petrochemical, power plant, cement plant) or related field, with ten or more years of supervisory experience in industrial construction. Advanced understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and ability to control and supervise large groups.
• Skills:
*Strong math knowledge and skills as related to the job tasks. Able to add, subtract, multiple, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
*Good interpersonal skills. A Superintendent should be able to get along with a wide variety of people and personalities. The ability to communicate well with others is a must.
*Above average computer skills in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook.
*Successfully complete the appropriate Traylor skills assessment tests.
• Education and Certification:
- Must be willing to attend and successfully complete continued training applicable to the job as deemed necessary by Traylor Industrial Construction Co. Training may include the NCCER curriculum, other third party courses, and Traylor developed classes.
- Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification.
- Be NCCER Certified Plus in their specific craft.
- NCCER ICTP certified instructor or willing to attend the training and occasionally teach modules from the NCCER curriculum.
• Physical:
*Must comply with Traylor’s drug and alcohol abuse policy.
*Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by Traylor.
*Able to climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, and stairways.
*Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.)
*Able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials. Traylor policy requires getting assistance to lift items over 50 lbs. Check with your project supervisor or project safety director.
*Must be able to work a 10 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside weather conditions.
*Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces. (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
*Must be clean shaven and able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.
• Safety/Environment:
- Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training. Knowledge of refinery and Chemical plant hazards which may require special precautions and PPE, such as Sulfuric, H2S and HF. Knowledge of power generating plant and cement plant hazards and special PPE.
- Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
- Understand and implement lockout/tagout procedures as needed or directed in a safe manner.
- CPR and 1st Aid trained when required.
- Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels, and permits in English.
