Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Structural Engineer. This position is located in Roy, Utah. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package. This position is contingent upon award.

What You Will Get To Do:

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.  

Basic Qualifications: 

This role can be filled at the Principal Structural Engineer (T03) or Sr. Principal Structural Engineer (T04) level.

Principal Structural Engineer: Bachelors degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of relevant experience, OR a Masters degree and 3 years of relevant experience, OR a PhD and 1 years of relevant experience.

  • Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance, at time of application, current and within scope, with an investigation date within the last 6 years.

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

  • Must have mechanical design experience for hypersonic systems, flight systems, missiles, etc.

  • Must have experience with systems packaging, sizing, and weight tradeoffs and analysis.

  • Experience creating and releasing mechanical product definition packages (PDPs).

  • Knowledge of typical aerospace manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability.

  • Experience designing air vehicle structures.

  • Experience developing mechanical interfaces and creating Interface Control Models (ICMs).

  • Proficiency with GD&T following ASME Y14.5.

  • Experience managing large system CAD models and mechanical interfaces.

  • Experience assessing and managing mass properties for large systems (knowledge of AIAA S-120A preferred).

  • Experience performing air vehicle static structural assessments including pressure mapping, inertial loading, and buckling.

  • Experience developing first-order structural sizing tools for quick turn assessments.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership abilities.

  • Demonstrated performance executing in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Sr. Principal Structural Engineer: Bachelors degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 8 years of relevant experience, OR a Masters degree and 6 years of relevant experience, OR a PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing and leading a technical team through major program milestones.
  • Proficiency with model-based product definition practices per ASME Y14.41.
  • Experience using Siemens NX for mechanical design modeling and model-based definition (MBD) for manufacturing.
  • Experience performing air vehicle dynamic structural assessments (Shock and Vibe).
  • Experience with Siemens Teamcenter for model configuration management and design release workflows.
  • Experience using ANSYS Mechanical for structural analysis.
  • Experience with Reentry Vehicle structures and Thermal Protection Systems.
  • Knowledge of Hypersonic Reentry Vehicle systems, environments, and typical structural tests and assessments.
  • Knowledge of Launch Vehicle interfaces and environments.
  • Experience performing mechanical integration of actuation and attitude control subsystems.
  • Knowledge of Reentry Vehicle payloads, avionics, and mission systems.
  • Knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing processes.

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
