The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Immunology, is seeking a full-time technician to support newly funded research programs. The Meisel lab investigates mechanisms of how the gut microbiota modulates systemic immunity in autoimmunity and cancer (see Meisel et al Nature 2018; Pandey et al., Cell Host Microbe 2022; Bender et al., Cell 2023; Phelps et al. Cell 2025). There are opportunities for independent projects within the mission of the laboratory, based on the applicant’s skills and goals.
The applicant will perform a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments, including determining experimental protocols; preparing laboratory specimens and cultures; and conducting microbiology experiments involving bacterial culture from mouse and human tissue. The applicant will analyze experimental data, interpret results, compile findings, and prepare reports and summaries. Responsibilities will also include maintaining detailed, accurate, and timely data records and laboratory notebooks; overseeing specimen inventory, ordering, and lab and chemical inventory; and preparing data, graphs, tables, and charts to document experimental results for publication. In addition, the applicant will contribute to manuscript and grant proposal preparation, perform literature searches, summarize findings for reports and written documentation, consult with researchers and staff regarding laboratory procedures and experiments, and develop recommendations and problem resolutions to improve research efforts.
Other required skills: Excellent organizational and planning skills, and attention to detail, working under sterile conditions are essential. Strong mathematical skills related to the biological sciences, including dilutions, ratios, concentrations, etc. Must keep detailed and accurate records. Excellent writing and verbal communication.
Qualifications: A Bacherlor’s Degree in Microbiology or Biology is required. Two Professional Years of Experience is required for this position. Knowledge of mathematical and chemical principles. Must be highly organized and efficient with their time. Must maintain professional demeanor and work well with others. Must be able to prioritize daily duties.
Job Summary
