SUE Field Technician
Job Summary
The SUE Field Technician serves as a lead technical resource for SUE field operations. This position is responsible for managing complex utility investigations for transportation land development, bridges, roadways, pipeline infrastructure projects. This role will lead field crews, ensuring quality standards are met, and mentoring junior staff. The Senior Technician provides advanced technical expertise and serves as primary field contact for project teams, utility owners, and clients.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead and execute utility designation, surveying, and vacuum excavation activities for complex projects while ensuring accurate utility identification and documentation.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily field operations, including crew assignments, project scheduling, resource allocation, and field logistics.
- Review field data, sketches, and utility records for accuracy, resolve utility conflicts, and maintain quality control standards across project deliverables.
- Serve as a primary field liaison with project managers, engineers, utility owners, contractors, and clients to support successful project execution.
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior technicians, fostering skill development and adherence to best practices.
- Promote a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence while supporting project budgets, schedules, and overall performance objectives.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED
- 5+ years of SUE, utility locating, surveying, or related infrastructure experience.
- Valid TX driver’s license
- Demonstrated experience leading field crews or serving as a lead
- Advanced knowledge of utility designation, vacuum excavation, and surveying practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Utility location certifications
- OSHA 30 certification
- Experience with GPS, GIS, survey software, and CADD platforms
- Experience coordinating multuple field crews
Physical Demands
- Stooping, kneeling, or crouching
- Walking, standing majority of time
Travel Requirements
- 75% or more of the time
Work Environment
- Exposure to heat, cold, or extreme weather
- Exposure to noise, odors and fumes
- Working around machinery, heavy equipment
