Project Accountant

We are looking for a detail-oriented Project Accountant to support financial oversight and invoice compliance for project-based work in Chesterfield, Missouri. This Long-term Contract position is well suited for someone who can balance accounting accuracy, contract awareness, and cross-functional coordination in a collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable reviewing financial records, addressing billing issues, and helping teams maintain consistent documentation standards. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to process improvements while supporting audit readiness and day-to-day project financial operations.

Responsibilities:
• Evaluate incoming invoices against contract terms, approved budgets, internal policies, and required backup documentation before processing.
• Examine billing details for accuracy and investigate variances tied to scope, deliverables, funding restrictions, or agreement requirements.
• Work closely with project teams and external contacts to clarify invoice issues, resolve exceptions, and keep payments moving on schedule.
• Provide guidance to internal staff and outside partners on invoicing expectations, documentation standards, and compliance-related procedures.
• Support education efforts by helping stakeholders understand billing workflows, financial controls, and recordkeeping requirements.
• Prepare and organize materials needed for audits, including supporting files, reconciliations, and responses to documentation requests.
• Assist with project coordination activities, financial compliance reviews, and additional assignments that support broader operational goals.
• Collaborate with leadership to identify and implement improvements in financial processes, invoice handling, and overall workflow efficiency.

Qualifications:

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Project Management, Communications, or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in project accounting, accounts payable, invoice administration, contract compliance, or a similar financial support role.
• Demonstrated ability to review invoices, validate supporting documentation, and apply compliance standards accurately.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to research discrepancies and resolve issues effectively.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
• Experience with project management platforms, invoice automation tools, Smartsheet, Stampli, or comparable systems is preferred.

Compensation

$28.50-$33.00 Hourly
