Job Description:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Career Development at RWU Law, the Assistant Director works directly with the Associate Director and the Assistant Dean to provide career counseling and support to a diverse group of law students and alumni as well as strategizing, developing and overseeing recruiting programs and events. 

Career Counseling

Provide students and alumni with counseling expertise to identify areas of interest and options for their individualized careers.

Plan career choices such as internships and externships and post-graduate opportunities; meticulously review application materials; perform mock interviews.

Directly connect students and graduates to relevant alumni and employers.

Counsel students on all aspects of JD advantage careers, including the non-traditional job search, via group presentations/programs, individual meetings, and specifically developed materials. 

Focus counseling plans and activities towards the particular needs of law school first-gen, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA students and alumni.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Development

Identify, strategize and develop programs with specific goals to proactively increase the availability, and successful attainment, of legal jobs for first-generation, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA students and alumni.

Identify and develop successful partnerships with legal employers and judges committed to DEI work.

Create sustainable programs which will guarantee annual internships, fellowships and post-graduate opportunities for students who have been historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

Engage with affinity group leaders to understand the needs of their members and create programming reflective of these needs. 

Liaise with the Associate Director of Career Development and the Director of Student Leadership, Access and Engagement to ensure that first-generation, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA students are fully supported throughout their career development and job searches.

Programs and Events

Plan, manage and implement annual on-campus interview programs and job fairs. Perform outreach to employers to recruit our students, facilitate on-campus interviews and resume collections, create schedules and host the employers while on campus.

Attend law alumni events periodically to connect with law alumni and represent the Office of Career Development. 

Relationship Building with External Partners

Represent the Office of Career Development and the School of Law at internal and external legal community events and at local and national organizations, including the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), the New England Law School Consortium (NELLIE), the Rhode Island Bar Association, the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair in Washington, DC, the New York University Public Interest Career Fair, the Lavender Law Career Fair, and the Boston Lawyers Group Career Fair, among others.

Assist the Assistant Dean in marketing and recruiting endeavors with legal employers to elevate the profile of the law school and make strategic connections with employers to benefit our students.

Research and Reporting

Assist the Assistant Dean and Associate Director in collecting employment outcomes of all our graduating students for the annual American Bar Association and National Association for Law Placement Surveys and in preparing a final report to the Dean of the School of Law.

Research and submit information to the NALP Directory of Law Schools.

Assist in other data collection reports including U.S. News and World Report and The Princeton Review.

Additional Functions

Oversee the management of the career development management software program, Symplicity.

Assist in supervising the Program Coordinator.





Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree. 

A minimum of three years of experience in law school career development, legal recruiting or legal practice. 

Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and program management skills.

Ability to take an energetic and creative approach to preparing a diverse group of students for the job search and marketing students to potential employers.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong organizational skills, including high attention-to-detail and the ability to multi-task.

Strong commitment to contributing to RWU's diversity, inclusivity, and equity goals.

Ability to maintain and nurture on-going professional relationships with law students, faculty, alumni, employers and the legal community.

Strong computer skills with experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and demonstrable knowledge of web-based legal career research databases.

Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Ability to work independently and under pressure, to function effectively in a team and service-oriented environment.

Ability to work with diverse group of first generation, BIPOC, and LGBTQ students.

Preferred Qualifications

Juris Doctor or Master's Degree in a related discipline.
