Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer
Description:
We are seeking an innovative and driven Mechanical Engineer to join our R&D team in developing groundbreaking, next-generation Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technologies. In this role, you will take complex physics and sensor concepts and turn them into robust, manufacturable, and field-ready mechanical designs.
This role requires a unique blend of office-based design and hands-on field validation. You will not only own the mechanical lifecycle (CAD, simulation, prototyping) but will also travel to rugged industrial environments to deploy prototypes, capture critical field data, and test your designs under real-world conditions.
This position requires travel. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen living in the Chesapeake, VA area, with the ability to acquire a Security Clearance and a U.S. Passport.
Responsibilities:
Innovative Mechanical Design: Create, iterate, and finalize 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings for complex NDT instruments, sensor enclosures, scanning mechanisms, and specialized fixtures.
Prototyping & Testing: Build physical prototypes and design custom test rigs. Execute rigorous mechanical, thermal, and environmental validation testing to ensure the technology survives harsh industrial environments.
Comprehensive Documentation: Author detailed engineering documentation, including technical specifications, Bill of Materials (BOMs), assembly procedures, test plans, and test reports.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with software developers, and NDT engineers to integrate sensors, PCBs, and cabling seamlessly into mechanical housings.
General Problem Solving: Tackle day-to-day engineering bottlenecks, manage vendor relationships for custom components, and support manufacturing transition efforts.
Required Skills:
CAD Expertise: High proficiency in 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or PTC Creo).
Technical Proficiency: Ability to read schematics, use various hand and power tools, and understand complex hardware/software.
Problem-Solving: Quick critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to resolve unforeseen issues on-site.
Customer Service: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to handle client complaints professionally and represent the company favorably.
Physical & Travel Requirements: A valid driver's license with a clean record, and the ability to lift heavy equipment, stand for long periods, or work in varying weather conditions
Education & Experience:
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or a closely related engineering discipline).
  • Knowledge of diverse manufacturing processes (injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, and 3D printing).
  • Preferred: Prior experience or exposure to NDT technologies, quality assurance, or materials testing.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Travel: Frequent travel to various field locations, job sites, and client facilities (up to 20% travel required).
  • Environment: Ability to work in diverse outdoor and industrial environments.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding, and stand for extended periods.
  • Valid Driver's License: Required to operate vehicles.
Pay Range: $65,000-$85,000
Excellent Benefits:
  • Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP)
  • Health
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Life Insurance
  • Short Term/Long Term Disability
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Dependent Care Spending Account
  • Family Leave
