Position Summary:
The Maintenance Electrician 4 is a journeyman-level position responsible for performing advanced installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of electrical systems and equipment in industrial and heavy commercial environments. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise, independent judgment, and leadership in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical infrastructure. The position emphasizes preventive maintenance, complex diagnostics, and compliance with all applicable codes and safety standards. Residential electrical work is not part of this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade electrical systems, including power distribution, motor controls, PLCs, VFDs, instrumentation, lighting, and automation equipment in industrial/heavy commercial settings.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical systems and equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational reliability.
- Diagnose complex electrical faults using multimeters, meggers, thermal imaging, and other diagnostic tools; interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Work with medium and low voltage systems (up to 480V or higher as required), including switchgear, transformers, motors, generators, and control panels.
- Ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA standards, Utah state regulations, and company safety policies. Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and maintenance activities.
- Collaborate with multi-trade teams (mechanical, instrumentation, millwrights, etc.) during equipment upgrades, shutdowns, and projects. Provide guidance and training to lower-level electricians.
- Participate in root cause analysis for electrical failures and implement corrective actions.
- Fabricate and install conduit, wiring, and supports as needed for new installations or modifications.
- Respond to emergency calls for electrical issues outside normal hours as part of a coverage rotation.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; promote and adhere to lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc flash, and other safety protocols.
Basic Qualifications and Requirements
- Current Utah Journeyman Electrician License (required; must be maintained in good standing through DOPL). Master Electrician license preferred.
- Minimum 5–7+ years of verifiable experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician in industrial or heavy commercial environments (e.g., manufacturing, utilities, mining, large facilities). Residential experience does not qualify.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, including PLC programming/troubleshooting, motor controls, variable frequency drives, and data acquisition systems.
- Proven ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and P&IDs.
- Physical ability to work in industrial settings (standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, confined spaces, and varying temperatures).
- Valid Utah driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with specific industrial controls (e.g. Allen-Bradley, or similar).
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs, and CMMS software.
- Leadership or mentoring experience.
- Knowledge of Utah-specific regulations and industrial safety standards.
- Welding, rigging, or basic mechanical skills as a plus.
- Knowledge of refrigeration and HVAC systems is a plus.
