Payroll Manager
Are you an experienced payroll professional looking for an opportunity to own the entire payroll function while helping drive process improvements and system enhancements? Our client is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee end-to-end payroll operations, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and support an upcoming payroll/HRIS system implementation.
This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys balancing payroll processing, compliance, reporting, and cross-functional collaboration while maintaining exceptional accuracy and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Administration
- Manage the complete payroll process for multiple payroll schedules, ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing.
- Process new hires, employee changes, terminations, direct deposits, tax updates, and payroll adjustments.
- Calculate and process complex compensation changes, bonuses, stipends, retroactive pay, and final paychecks.
- Serve as the primary payroll resource for employees and managers, responding to payroll-related questions and resolving issues.
- Process payroll deductions including garnishments, tax levies, child support, and other required withholdings.
- Partner closely with Human Resources regarding employee records, paid time off, benefits administration, and payroll-related updates.
- Prepare payroll journal entries, account reconciliations, and support month-end close activities.
- Maintain payroll records while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare and file quarterly and annual payroll tax reports.
- Coordinate year-end payroll activities, including W-2 processing and payroll reconciliations.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing payroll schedules and required documentation.
- Assist with payroll budgeting, headcount reporting, and labor cost analysis.
- Generate payroll reports and provide insights to leadership to support business decisions.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Help support the implementation of a new HRIS/payroll platform.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, and efficiencies.
- Maintain payroll system integrity and assist with testing and implementation of system enhancements.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- 6+ years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 3 years managing or leading payroll operations.
- Strong knowledge of payroll tax compliance, including quarterly and annual filings.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with experience managing large datasets.
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- Experience leading or participating in an HRIS or payroll system implementation.
- Experience working with multi-pay cycle payroll environments.
- CPP certification or similar payroll certification is a plus.
Compensation
