Accountant

Our client is seeking a Staff Accountant to join their accounting team on a contract-to-hire basis. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys a mix of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting, and audit support. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end close activities, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Financial Reporting

• Prepare and post journal entries for multiple funds and accounts.
• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
• Review financial transactions and ensure accurate account coding.
• Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
• Support the preparation of year-end financial statements and reporting packages.

Reconciliations & Account Analysis

• Perform bank account, balance sheet, and subsidiary ledger reconciliations.
• Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and variances.
• Prepare supporting schedules and account analyses.
• Ensure accurate recording of revenues, expenses, and intercompany/interfund transactions.

Budget, Compliance & Audit Support

• Assist with budget monitoring and financial analysis.
• Review expenditures for compliance with established policies and procedures.
• Support internal controls and process improvement initiatives.
• Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
• Assist auditors during annual audit activities and respond to information requests.

Capital Assets & Special Projects

• Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
• Assist with capital project and debt-related accounting activities.
• Support grant reporting and compliance requirements when applicable.
• Participate in special projects, system enhancements, and process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Experience with month-end close processes.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and formulas.
• Experience with ERP systems and accounting software.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with governmental, fund, or municipal accounting.
• Knowledge of grant accounting, capital project accounting, or fixed asset accounting.
• Familiarity with ERP systems such as Tyler Munis, Incode, SAP, or similar platforms.
• Understanding of GAAP and financial compliance requirements.
