Accounts Payable Specialist

We are looking for an Accounts Payable Specialist to join a growing finance team in Illinois. This contract opportunity with potential for a permanent role is suited for someone who brings strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to keep accounts payable operations running smoothly in a fast-moving environment. The role offers the chance to work closely with internal stakeholders and vendors while helping maintain accurate financial records and dependable payment processes.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the full daily accounts payable cycle, including invoice entry, employee expense submissions, and timely vendor disbursements.

• Review invoices for accuracy, assign appropriate account coding, and confirm compliance with company procedures and accounting standards.

• Partner with vendors and internal teams to investigate payment issues, clear discrepancies, and respond to questions efficiently.

• Reconcile payable balances and support monthly close activities by preparing accurate records and resolving outstanding items.

• Maintain organized documentation, verify approvals, and uphold internal controls throughout the accounts payable process.

• Track open liabilities and scheduled payments to support cash planning and ensure obligations are met on time.

• Prepare supporting materials for audits and help ensure adherence to established accounting practices and reporting requirements.

• Recommend and assist with process improvements that strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and consistency within the AP function.

• Provide day-to-day assistance and knowledge sharing to colleagues when needed across accounts payable activities.

Qualifications:

• 1–3 years of experience in accounts payable or a closely related accounting position.
• Working knowledge of invoice coding, account coding, ACH processing, and check run procedures.
• Strong Excel skills and confidence using accounting or financial software systems.
• Excellent attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy across a high volume of transactions.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for working with vendors and internal business partners.
• Ability to work independently while also contributing positively within a collaborative team environment.

Compensation

$20.90-$24.20 Hourly
