A Laboratory Manager 1 position is available in the laboratories of Dr. Joseph Martel and Dr. Leah Byrne in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology.
The successful candidate should have a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in a relevant field (such as animal technology, biology, or zoology), as well as 5+ years experience in animal management. We are specifically seeking candidates with strong multi-tasking and time management skills, an effective and professional communication style, experience in project management, and experience in dealing with vendors. Familiarity with the University of Pittsburgh animal facility is a plus.
Job Summary
Manages day-to-day laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Works with, adapts, and installs scientific equipment in research laboratories. Collaborates on routine projects and procedures. Manages inventory and equipment and performs budget functions.
Essential Functions
. The manager will help to prep and oversee animal surgeries and help to organize the procurement of human and animal tissue samples for research. Duties will include organization and prepping for large animal surgeries, assisting in surgeries, overseeing management of IACUC protocols, organizing the procurement of tissue samples (from human donors and animals), and other administrative activities in the lab such as ordering and tracking of supplies, reagents and animals.
Physical Effort
The candidate must be able to stand for long periods of time and handle large animals including pigs and non-human primates.
