Position Summary
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research and development organization that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) is a nonprofit organization that manages and operates the NRAO under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. The Observatory is a hub for technological and scientific collaboration, operating state-of-the-art radio telescope facilities for use by the international scientific community. The Observatory has been instrumental in the study of black holes, galaxies, and the early universe.
At NRAO, we are currently recruiting a Business Process Data Analyst. The Business Analyst supports organizational effectiveness by applying data analysis and process improvement techniques to inform decision-making and drive operational efficiency. This role develops analytical tools, reports, and documentation, while collaborating cross-functionally to design, implement, and support solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
The position will be based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with the possibility of a hybrid schedule after successful onboarding and training.
What You Will be Doing:
- Using analytical methodologies and data analysis to develop and deploy tools, including dashboards, infographics, reports, and spreadsheet models, to inform and support decision-making.
- Developing process documentation and project plans.
- Researching, analyzing, and recommending changes to departmental processes.
- Collecting and studying data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Creating reports, flowcharts, process maps, and diagrams.
- Designing and preparing documentation, training materials, and communications supporting new processes. May deliver training to impacted business units.
- Supporting cross-functional activities and working sessions during project design and implementation phases, including testing and evaluation.
- Performing maintenance and data verification across impacted systems, including review and evaluation of period-ending financial data.
- Providing miscellaneous user support as needed.

Work is mission-driven, team-oriented, and typically performed in an office setting within a research or development environment.
Who You Are:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
- No prior experience required with an appropriate degree.
- While not required, previous experience in a business office environment is preferred
Skills and Competencies
- Must be highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact within a team, but must also have the ability to work self-directed.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel and various software tools (SQL, Power Query, Cognos Analytics, Python, Power BI).
- Familiarity with general accounting concepts, practices, and procedures strongly preferred.
Observatory employees must be authorized to work in the United States. The Observatory presently cannot sponsor H-1B Visas for this position.
Total Rewards:
Compensation
The starting salary for this position is between $52,877-$74,028. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include; education, experience, skills, competencies, other qualifications of the successful candidate, as well as internal equity and labor market conditions.
