Department Overview

The Labor & Delivery Unit has 12 labor rooms, a 4-bed triage area, 3 dedicated operating rooms, and a 2-bay PACU. We provide patient care for our most complex and fragile patients as well as to patients who prefer low intervention births. We have a robust midwifery practice that also promotes underwater birth. OHSU also has a specialized programs coordinated by our maternal fetal medicine providers, neonatologists, pediatric surgeons and specialty care coordinators who help coordinate care, so our families have all the cutting-edge care at their fingertips. Function/Duties of Position

The Labor & delivery unit provides intrapartum, antepartum and newborn care to low-risk and at-risk populations. Care is provided based on acuity and patient type and is in line with the Association of Obstetric, Women's Health and Neonatal Nurses Guidelines for patients care (AWHONN).

We staff to AWHONN standards. This unit has a Maternal Cardiac program.

We have a Fetal Surgery program, supporting the following among other things: Intrauterine Fetal Neural Tube Defect Repair Intrauterine ablations for twin-to-twin transfusions (TTTS) Fetal blood transfusions Amniotic fluid reduction 80% of the nurses on this unit hold advanced certifications. Our nurses are represented on our Shared Governance committee.

 

 

 

 

1. Strategic & Unit Planning — Partners with the Nurse Manager to translate organizational 
and nursing priorities into unit plans; contributes to goal setting (short- and long-term), 
measurable targets, and implementation timelines; coordinates interventions, tracks progress 
using data, and communicates status to stakeholders; supports readiness for 
accreditation/regulatory changes.


2. Operational Leadership — Oversees day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling, 
assignments, patient flow, and escalation pathways to ensure safe, effective care; leads 
huddles and facilitates clear communication; may provide leadership coverage across all 
shifts (days/evenings/nights/weekends) as operationally needed.


3. Staff Supervision & Development — Provides coaching, mentoring, competency 
validation, and performance feedback; participates in orientation and evaluations; supports 
recruitment, retention, and succession planning; recognizes exemplary practice and addresses 
performance concerns.


4. Quality, Safety & Risk — Promotes adherence to professional standards, organizational 
policies, and regulatory requirements; uses data to monitor outcomes; leads/participates in 
performance improvement, event review, risk mitigation, and dissemination of best practices; 
supports standard work and error-reduction processes.


5. Human Resources & Employee Relations — Fosters engagement and a positive work 
environment; facilitates conflict resolution; supports attendance management and progressive 
performance management; ensures compliance with applicable labor/collective bargaining 
agreements and HR policies.


6. Resource & Financial Stewardship — Assists with productivity and resource monitoring; 
applies staffing tools and guidelines; monitors overtime/premium use and supply utilization; 
educates staff on financial implications of care decisions and supports cost-effective 
operations.


7. Professional Practice & Collaboration — Models ethical, professional nursing practice 
consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act; advocates for patients and 
families; collaborates with interprofessional teams and shared-governance structures; 
promotes a culture of safety, equity, and inclusion.


Required Qualifications


• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

• Two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience in a related specialty, including 
demonstrated leadership responsibilities required. (e.g., charge nurse, preceptor, supervisor, 
or equivalent).

• Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license (or ability to obtain prior to hire).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Additional clinical certifications (e.g., ACLS, NRP) may be required by assignment.
• Leadership/specialty certification (e.g., NE-BC, CNML, or clinical specialty) within two (2) 
years of hire
