Position Title: Senior Technical Writer
Overview:
As a Technical Writer, you will support all phases of the software and systems lifecycle by creating, maintaining, and improving technical documentation for federal government programs. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with exceptional written communication skills who can work closely with software developers, engineers, cybersecurity personnel, project managers, and business stakeholders to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise documentation. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently while collaborating across cross-functional teams to develop high-quality documentation that supports software development, IT operations, cybersecurity compliance, and business processes.
All applicants must live in DC/MD/VA and be able to work onsite in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, edit, and maintain technical documentation including system documentation, user guides, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical manuals, installation guides, and knowledge base articles.
- Collaborate with software developers, engineers, cybersecurity personnel, business analysts, and project managers to gather technical information and accurately document system functionality.
- Create and maintain documentation supporting the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements, design documents, release notes, test documentation, and operational procedures.
- Develop documentation supporting cloud-based solutions, application deployments, infrastructure, and system integrations.
- Prepare and maintain Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authority to Operate (ATO), cybersecurity, and compliance documentation as required.
- Create process flows, diagrams, workflows, and visual documentation using Visio or similar tools.
- Ensure documentation complies with organizational standards, federal regulations, Section 508 accessibility requirements, and configuration management processes.
- Maintain document repositories within SharePoint or other document management systems, ensuring version control and document integrity.
- Review existing documentation for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and usability while recommending improvements.
- Support proposal development and contract deliverables by preparing technical narratives and documentation as required.
- Stay current with documentation standards, industry best practices, emerging technologies, and federal documentation requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Five (5) or more years of experience developing technical documentation supporting software development, information technology, or federal government programs.
- Experience documenting software applications, cloud environments, infrastructure, or cybersecurity solutions.
- Experience creating documentation for Agile software development projects and the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Visio, and document management tools.
- Excellent written, verbal, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience supporting Department of State, DoD, or other Federal Civilian agencies.
- Experience developing documentation for Azure cloud environments or DevSecOps processes.
- Familiarity with NIST 800-53, Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authority to Operate (ATO), and cybersecurity documentation.
- Experience documenting ServiceNow implementations, IT Service Management (ITSM), or enterprise applications.
- Experience using collaboration and project management tools such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, or Git.
- Technical certifications such as Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), ITIL Foundation, Security+, or Agile certifications.
