Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast, with offices located throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

GMC’s growing Architecture team is seeking a Design Professional II to help lead impactful projects with our Charlotte, NC office. In this role, you will collaborate closely with architects, engineers, clients, and consultants to support technical execution and deliver successful projects through all phases of design and construction. You’ll play an important role in translating project vision into thoughtful, functional, and high-quality design solutions while helping ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with client goals.

The Design Professional II position is a degreed, non-licensed architecture professional developing expertise in conventional aspects of architectural practice. This role supports the design team by executing assignments on projects of small to moderate size and complexity, contributing to conceptual design, planning, programming, and other project-related activities with appropriate level of support. While primarily office-based, the position may involve fieldwork as required to support project objectives, providing opportunities to further develop technical skills and professional knowledge under the guidance of senior staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

TECHNICAL

  • Utilizes a strong understanding of computer-aided design (CAD) software, including Revit, along with established techniques, standards, and tools to support the preparation of technical drawings.
  • Transforms and develops initial rough preliminary designs into working documents utilizing Revit and or CAD software.
  • Reviews drawings and documents for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project standards.
  • Maintains deadlines, goals, and production standards set by the department. Coordinates and consults with team members to complete projects on time.
  • Assists in the development of client presentations and visual materials.
  • Applies standard methods to routine tasks while developing professional judgment and understanding of ethical responsibilities.
  • Conducts code and product research, prepares as-built drawings, and supports permit applications and project documentation.
  • Assists in preparing meeting agendas, documenting notes, and responding to contractor RFIs.
  • Reviews shop drawings for compliance and conduct site visits to monitor construction progress.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support project and departmental needs.

COLLABORATION

  • Collaborates with design originators to resolve discrepancies between original drawings and final working drawings
  • Communicates effectively with team members regarding project planning, meetings, schedules, and deadlines.
  • Collaborates with team members to expand industry knowledge and professional expertise.
  • Actively seeks learning opportunities from both peers and leaders to enhance technical knowledge and skills
  • Collaborates across disciplines and office locations to leverage the firm’s collective expertise.

AREA OF FOCUS

  • Completion of NCARB experience hours in support of architectural licensure.
  • Strong understanding of building details and construction document development.
  • Advancement of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) review processes.
  • Introduction to GMC Learning Communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited architectural program.
  • 3-8 years of experience, preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of Revit and CAD software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop technical and professional skills.
  • Must be able to perform work-related travel and have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be local to GMC office

TRAVEL EXPECTATION

  • Approximately 10%

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position requires work to be performed in an office environment and in the field.
  • Work done in the field may consist of exposure to various types of weather and temperatures. You may also be exposed to pollutants, chemicals, insects, and possibly water-borne pathogens, Employees are required to wear appropriate protective clothing and gear when performing fieldwork.
  • Office work may consist of prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Movements such as bending, twisting, crouching, etc.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
