This position is for the Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. The salary range for this part-time position will be prorated based on 67% effort as the position is 25 hours per week. This position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment. Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions

• Performs research related to the pathophysiology of rare genetic diseases, primarily Prader-Willi syndrome and mitochondrial metabolic disorders, under the guidance of the PI.

• Key work is maintenance of a mouse colony for PWS, with genotyping, tissue dissection, and studies on the clinical basis.

• Will contribute to molecular biology procedures (DNA, RNA, protein, viral) and mammalian cell culture use to study gene expression.

• Keeps detailed, accurate, and timely lab notebook as well as electronic data.

• Contributes to laboratory maintenance and ordering of laboratory supplies.


Physical Effort

Light physical activity. Requires movement at times between the laboratory and location of equipment, to the mouse room, handling of mice, and other experiments require hand dexterity; some of the work requires standing. Any lifting is light (e.g., mouse cages, boxes of supplies, buckets of ice, carrying trays of tissue culture cell flasks, etc.).

Work Schedule: This position is part-time for 25 hr per week, 5 hr/day. There will be a little flexibility in terms of the start and end times with a requirement to include the 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM window within the 5 hr/day. No evenings and no, or at most extremely rarely, weekends, and only if all other lab personnel are out of town and there is an urgent need. In the latter instance, it would be at most a couple of hours on one day and would be planned in advance to ensure compatibility with schedule.
