Overview

The Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Electrical provides technical leadership and expertise for electrical systems supporting capital construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvement projects. This role serves as the organization's electrical authority, ensuring projects are designed, installed, commissioned, and maintained in accordance with applicable codes, client requirements, and industry best practices.

The SME partners with project managers, operations, contractors, and clients throughout the project lifecycle to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective electrical solutions.



Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical oversight for electrical aspects of capital projects from planning through commissioning.
  • Review and approve electrical designs, drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, OSHA, local building codes, and client standards.
  • Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and scope development.
  • Conduct site assessments and provide recommendations for electrical infrastructure improvements.
  • Evaluate existing electrical distribution systems, switchgear, MCCs, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and lighting systems.
  • Provide technical guidance during construction and resolve complex electrical issues.
  • Participate in design review meetings with architects, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Review Requests for Information (RFIs), change orders, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with contractor selection and evaluate vendor qualifications.
  • Support commissioning, startup, functional testing, and project closeout activities.
  • Develop electrical standards, specifications, and best practices for future projects.
  • Perform root cause analysis for electrical failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Mentor engineering and maintenance personnel on electrical systems and industry best practices.
  • Support preventive maintenance strategies for newly installed equipment.
  • Travel to project sites as required.


Qualifications

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of electrical engineering experience supporting industrial, commercial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • 5+ years supporting capital projects or construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution
    • Switchgear and switchboards
    • Transformers
    • Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
    • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
    • Emergency power systems
    • Generators
    • UPS systems
    • Lighting and lighting controls
    • Grounding and bonding systems
  • Working knowledge of:
    • National Electrical Code (NEC)
    • NFPA standards
    • OSHA regulations
    • IEEE standards
  • Experience reviewing construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Experience with SKM PowerTools or ETAP.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience supporting healthcare, aviation, manufacturing, data centers, or large commercial facilities.

  • Strong technical expertise in electrical engineering principles.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple capital projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk active construction sites and industrial facilities.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments.
