Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking an Technical Services Sr. Principal Engineer (T04 level). This position is located in Roy, Utah and supports the Sentinel program.
What You'll Get To Do:
The selected candidate will serve as the principal conduit between our training organization, the customer, suppliers, and the weapon system teams. Positioned within Weapon System Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and working groups, these engineers will capture system level requirements, translate them into actionable training solutions, and maintain the architectural models that underpin sustainment and life cycle planning.
In this role, the engineer will develop and manage comprehensive training documentation, design sustainment strategies, and coordinate closely with engineering, production, logistics, contracting, and customer support functions. This role requires understanding in courseware development and training device development and the ability to transform information gathered from IPTs and working groups into effective training solutions that support both current operations and long term sustainment.
Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Gather & Validate Training Requirements – Attend IPT meetings, working groups, and customer briefings to collect training needs; verify completeness and traceability in DOORS.
- Develop & Maintain Training Architecture – Sustain system level training models in CAMEO, linking materiel functions, human performance, and support equipment; keeping models current as the weapon system evolves.
- Produce Technical Training Documents – Author Training Requirement Documents, Training Plans, and Technical Reports that meet applicable MIL STD/DoD standards and are fully traceable to system requirements.
- Sustainment Strategy & Life Cycle Forecasting – Design comprehensive sustainment strategies that include training concepts, schedules, risk mitigation actions, and forecasted training effort over the system life cycle.
- Liaise Across Disciplines – Interface daily with engineering, production, logistics, contracting, and customer support teams to ensure training objectives align with system design, production schedules, and logistic support plans.
- Facilitate Information Flow – Synthesize technical information gathered from IPTs and working groups, then communicate concise status, issues, and recommendations to the training team, senior management, and the customer.
- Support Systems Engineering Processes – Participate in system functional analyses, interface control documentation, and configuration management activities; apply systems engineering discipline to training solution design.
- Apply Training Development Lifecycle – Perform analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of training solutions; recommend corrective actions based on performance metrics and lessons learned.
- Risk & Issue Management – Identify training related risks, develop mitigation plans, and track issue resolution in coordination with all stakeholder groups.
- Mentor & Share Knowledge – Provide technical guidance to junior staff and act as a subject matter expert for training systems integration within the organization.
Basic Qualifications:
Sr. Principal Engineer Technical Services: 8 Years with Bachelors of Science; 6 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD or an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Bachelors of Science in Instructional Systems Design, System Engineering, Human Factors, Instructional Technology, Human Performance, Training and Learning Development, Psychology, or related field.
Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need
Minimum 5 years’ experience defining customer training needs and recommending solutions, with documented deliverables (e.g., Training Requirement Documents) authoring Training Requirement Documents, Training Plans, and Technical Reports that meet applicable standards that are fully traceable to system requirements.
Demonstrated experience working with the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) community or similar strategic weapons programs, specifically on training matters.
Experience in IBM Rational DOORS (requirements management) and No Magic CAMEO (SysML/architecture modeling).
Experience applying analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation processes (SAM or equivalent models) to training solutions.
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
Master of Science in Instructional Systems Design, System Engineering, Human Factors, Instructional Technology, Human Performance, Training and Learning Development, Psychology, or related field.
Direct experience on a long term sustainment or product development program (=10 year life cycle).
Experience with Sentinel program
Experience with ICBM programs
Formal training in instructional systems design (e.g., ATD, ADDIE or SAM certification).
Hands on MBSE experience, including creation of system models that integrate training architecture.
Experience using risk analysis tools (e.g., MIL STD 882, FMEA) for training related risks.
Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC) to align training for software updates and patches.
Prior direct interaction with DoD customers or program managers in a training support capacity.
Experience leading small to medium projects, using tools such as MS Project, Primavera, or Agile boards.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
