Post Doctoral.Post Doctoral.Associate
Electrical and Computer Engineering - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26003862)

The Pitt Intelligent System Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate working at the intersection of smart healthcare, generative AI, and computing systems. The successful candidate will develop efficient, deployable, and trustworthy generative AI systems for healthcare applications, with potential research topics including multimodal foundation models, healthcare agents, mobile and wearable sensing, on-device and edge AI, and efficient model training and inference. The postdoctoral associate will lead high-impact research projects, collaborate with faculty, students, healthcare professionals, and external partners, publish in premier AI and computing venues, contribute to research proposals and open-source artifacts, and help mentor graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related field by the appointment start date.
  • Demonstrated research experience in at least one relevant area, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI, computer systems, mobile computing, or smart healthcare.
  • Strong programming and system-development skills, particularly in Python and modern deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Ability to independently formulate research problems, design and evaluate technical solutions, and communicate results through high-quality publications and presentations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and mentor graduate or undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience with large language models, vision-language models, multimodal foundation models, diffusion models, or AI agents.
  • Expertise in efficient AI infrastructure and systems, including model training, fine-tuning, inference optimization, distributed or federated learning, and on-device or edge AI.
  • Experience developing AI-enabled healthcare technologies involving smartphones, wearables, medical imaging, physiological signals, acoustic sensing, human activity analysis, telemedicine, or clinical decision support.
  • Strong publication record in leading AI, systems, mobile computing, computer vision, or digital-health venues.
  • Experience with GPU-based systems, embedded or mobile platforms, cloud infrastructure, Android development, or platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson.
  • Experience collaborating with clinicians, working with human-subject or clinical datasets, or addressing healthcare privacy, security, fairness, and regulatory considerations.
  • Experience preparing research proposals, releasing open-source software or datasets, and mentoring junior researchers.
