Overview

The Princeton University Library seeks a Library Shipping and Receiving Assistant. The incumbent will make scheduled daily deliveries of library materials, books, and other miscellaneous items within Firestone and the branch libraries, pick up and deliver materials to Forestall Annex and ReCAP (large book trucks weighing 500-600 lbs.), and pick up special services packages at the U.S. Post Office as needed.

It employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 professionals and staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities. The library supports a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars.



Responsibilities

  • Prepare deliveries for the branch libraries by sorting newspapers, periodicals, interdepartmental, and first-class mail into their respective delivery boxes for the branch libraries
  • Sort all mail and boxes of books that are picked up from the branch libraries during the delivery of library materials
  • Help pack books for FedEx, UPS, and USPS shipments as well as other delivery services
  • Assist with running the automated mailroom equipment
  • Sort and distribute first-class mail, campus mail, packages, and books to the units in Firestone Library when needed
  • Pack books for branch libraries, UPS, FedEx, and USPS shipments, and other delivery services

(ILS & Borrow Direct)

  • Pick up gift books from donors' houses
  • Receive incoming shipments from vendors
  • Receive equipment, books, and library supplies shipped to 693 Alexander Road
  • Assist with the upkeep of library delivery trucks, the delivery van, and the golf cart
  • Critical to the position is ensuring the integrity, accuracy, safety, and confidentiality of mail handled by the Library Shipping & Receiving Department, in accordance with USPS mailing standards, mail safety standards, internal protocols, Princeton policies, and standards

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • 4-6 years of related experience
  • Valid driver's license and experience driving a 12-14 cube truck
  • High level of customer service skills and the ability to work independently
  • Computer skills such as email and Windows-based shipping systems, such as SMART mailing software from Quadient
  • Knowledge of postal regulations and Express Services such as DHL, Federal Express, and UPS
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to move wooden carts that weigh between 500 and 600 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a walk-behind forklift.
  • Valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certification (Medical Card), or the ability to obtain one before start date - FMCS - Medical Examiner's Certificate, which will need to be re-certified based on the regulations. Valid permanent driver’s license (non-provisional, non-probationary, non-interim) issued by a US State (International Driver’s License is not acceptable) as outlined in the Fleet Safety Policy
  • Typical work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a required rotating 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. shift to provide coverage for the late ReCAP pickup

  • Lift to 40 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead, and up to 75 pounds in a range of motions from floor to shoulder height
  • Work on a loading dock and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including shoveling snow from the loading dock area when necessary, during the winter months
  • Possess a full range of body motions and physical agility
