Business Development Manager
Position Summary
Sauer Construction is seeking a relationship-driven and market-focused Business Development Manager to lead growth in the private commercial and institutional construction sectors.
This role is responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities, strengthening client relationships, and driving project pursuits across key target markets. The ideal candidate is an outgoing, well-networked professional with prior experience in the construction (or adjacent) industry who can effectively represent Sauer and position the company for negotiated and competitive opportunities.
This is a full-time, sales-focused position that may also include additional involvement in marketing, proposal development, and preconstruction support.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Opportunity Creation
- Identify, qualify, and pursue new project opportunities within target markets
- Develop relationships with:
- Developers and property owners
- Architects, engineers, and design consultants
- Other industry networking facilitators
- Build and maintain an active pipeline of prospective projects
- Attend conferences, tradeshows and/or industry events.
- Position Sauer for both negotiated work and competitive procurements
Client Relationship Management
- Establish and maintain relationships with clients and industry partners
- Serve as a primary liaison between client POC’s and Sauer teams
- Foster repeat business through engagement and high-quality client interaction
Preconstruction & Proposal Support
- Collaborate with estimating and preconstruction teams to:
- Develop pursuit strategies tailored to each opportunity
- Support RFQ/RFP responses, qualifications packages, and presentations
- Participate in client interviews and project pursuits
- Help align client expectations with Sauer’s capabilities and delivery approach
Marketing & Strategic Growth
Support and assist development of marketing materials, including project profiles, capability statements, sector-specific messaging
- Provide market intelligence on:
- Target clients and competitors
- Emerging opportunities and project pipelines
- Assist leadership in refining strategic growth initiatives across key markets
Qualifications
Required
- 4+ years of experience in:
- Commercial construction, real estate development, A/E/C industry, OR
- A closely related field (subcontracting, consulting, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to develop business relationships and generate leads
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and networking skills
- Self-motivated with a strong sales and results-oriented mindset
Preferred
- Existing relationships with developers or property owners
- Experience working with developers, institutional clients, and design teams
- Familiarity with RFQ/RFP procurement processes
- Understanding of precon services and early-stage project development
