Responsibilities
The Corporate Counsel will serve as an entry level in-house generalist for the Law Department, supporting senior in-house legal counsel in managing legal matters for MSA and its global subsidiaries. This role will report to the Associate General Counsel - Litigation and Risk and will primarily advise and assist on product liability litigation, as well as emerging laws and regulations.
This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with 3–5 years of experience who wants to join a high-performing, collegial law department and develop in-house skills while playing a meaningful role in litigation management. The successful candidate will be a team player who is willing to contribute across priorities to support a lean legal team, exercising independent judgment and strategic thinking, and becoming a trusted advisor to the business. The role will also focus on identifying and implementing process improvements that strengthen the litigation function and support the Company.
Responsibilities Include:
Litigation and Risk
- Assist with litigation and related matters affecting the Company and its subsidiaries.
- Support senior in-house and outside counsel by helping to develop and execute product liability case strategy, evaluating risk, and preparing recommendations and proactive counseling for business stakeholders.
- Coordinate and manage discovery activities, including document preservation, collection, review workflows, and production processes; partner with internal functions (eDiscovery/IT, records, compliance, operations) to ensure timely and defensible responses.
- Improve processes to support litigation efforts, including templates, playbooks, matter intake, status reporting, spend management, and lessons-learned routines.
- Aid the legal team in responding to agency investigations, third-party requests for information, and subpoenas, including issue spotting, document coordination, and drafting initial responses.
- Review marketing, advertising, and product promotional materials (print, digital, web, social, trade show materials) for legal risk, accuracy, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies.
- Partner with Marketing, Product, Quality, and Regulatory/EHS teams to ensure claims are appropriately substantiated, appropriately qualified, and aligned with product performance, safety, labeling, and applicable standards.
General Legal Support
- Provide general legal support to Associate General Counsel – Corporate and Transactions, Senior Counsel and Director of Compliance, and business stakeholders as needed, including review of selected commercial agreements (e.g., NDAs, supplier/customer terms, service agreements) and support for compliance initiatives.
- Coordinate the Company’s records management and records retention program and assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining records retention schedules, guidance, and training materials across key business functions.
- Assist in evaluating emerging laws and regulations and guiding the Company’s response.
Qualifications
Education (required):
- Juris Doctor
- Licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania (or other jurisdiction that would permit in-house practice in the state)
Education (preferred):
- Law Review or a top legal journal
Experience (required):
- Minimum 3-5 years’ prior practice, including meaningful exposure to litigation and discovery (law firm and/or in-house)
- Sharp analytical skills, sound judgment, and excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate legal issues into practical business guidance
- Proven record of strong negotiating, organizational, and people management skills
- Proven record of influencing and building relationships
- Able to demonstrate a willingness to embrace innovative approaches to legal work, such as an understanding of legal operations, value-based fee agreements, continuous improvement principles, project management, or use of technology solutions
Experience (preferred):
- Prior practice at a top law firm
- Experience with product liability, environmental, regulatory, data privacy, or other such matters
- Trial-team experience in state or federal court
- Judicial clerkship
