Job Summary:
The NDT Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) personnel, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and military defense industry standards. This role manages daily inspection operations, coordinates workload scheduling, ensures accurate documentation, and upholds the highest levels of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. The NDT Supervisor plays a critical role in supporting production, quality assurance, and customer requirements for complex defense manufacturing projects.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise, mentor, and provide technical direction to NDT and CWI personnel to ensure accurate and efficient inspections.
- Plan and assign work based on production schedules, project deadlines, and customer priorities.
- Review and approve inspection reports, records, and test results to verify compliance with applicable codes, engineering drawings, and military standards.
- Assist NDT Coordinator in ensuring all NDT methods (such as VT, MT, PT, UT, RT) are performed according to approved procedures and industry standards (AWS, ASNT, ASTM, MIL-STD, etc.).
- Maintain qualifications, certifications, and training records for all inspection personnel.
- Support and enforce compliance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, AWS D1.1, NAVSEA, and other applicable military/defense specifications.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to resolve inspection findings and recommend corrective actions.
- Support in overseeing calibration, maintenance, and availability of all NDT equipment and materials.
- Ensure adherence to all safety regulations and promote a safe working environment
- Support internal and external audits, customer source inspections, and third-party surveillance activities.
- Provide input for continuous improvement initiatives within the inspection and welding quality control processes.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (as demonstrated through experience, training and/or testing)
- Current or recent certification as Level II or Level III in at least two NDT methods per ASNT SNT-TC-1A or NAS-410.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of welding codes, standards, and inspection practices (AWS D1.1, MIL-STD, NAVSEA, etc.).
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or equivalent quality management systems.
- Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain any necessary security clearances required for defense manufacturing work.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical field preferred.
- Prior experience in a military/defense manufacturing or shipbuilding environment preferred.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in NDT within a plant, manufacturing or defense industry environment, including at least 1 years in a supervisory or lead role.
Background Prerequisites:
Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks and controlled substance testing.
