Correctional Nursing Asst

Position Description

This position is responsible for provision of basic nursing care and services that are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or physician in a correctional institution.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Perform Patient specific tasks. Assist with patient hygiene, change linens, repositioning, ambulating, obtaining and recording vital signs, blood sugars and weights and reports abnormal to total patient care nurse. Performs EKG's, reports change in skin integrity.
  • Maintain safe, therapeutic and healthy environment. Checks sharp containers and change if needed. Passes ice, checks refrigerator temperature, records and assists with feeding. Clean and calibrate glucometer. Reports unsafe/unsecured equipment or environment.
  • Adheres to infection control standards. Ensures equipment is placed in designated areas and assist in cleaning equipment, break room and nurses station. Assist in cleaning patient rooms.
  • Assist in maintenance of supplies levels. Notifies Charge Nurse of supplies needed and restocks with guidance of Charge Nurse. Monitors and rotates supplies for expiration dates.
  • Assumes extra responsibilities and offers assistance in other areas. Assist nurses in emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Required Qualifications

High School diploma. Completion of a nursing or medical assistant training course OR six months experience as a nursing assistant OR Completion of a Patient Care Technician Course.
