Job Summary
The Protection & Control Relay Technician I will support FirstEnergy E365 substation testing and commissioning projects in Pennsylvania. This role will assist field leadership with testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and documentation of protection and control systems and related substation equipment. The technician will work under supervision while developing hands-on experience with utility substation testing, relay systems, electrical drawings, safety procedures, and customer site requirements.
Job Responsibilities
Assist field leadership with testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing technical equipment in transmission and distribution substations.
Support testing of power delivery equipment including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, automatic transfer switches, protective relays, and related power equipment and controls.
Assist with wire checks, relay programming support, CT checks, functional checks, and verification of substation equipment.
Perform medium and high-voltage electrical power equipment testing under supervision.
Read, interpret, and utilize electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals during testing and commissioning work.
Assist with identifying and resolving technical issues during installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
Prepare and maintain reports documenting tests, maintenance, repairs, and field activities.
Follow all safety practices, customer site requirements, company policies, and applicable industry standards.
Work closely with project leadership, engineers, electricians, and other field technicians to support safe and timely project completion.
Maintain a safety-focused and customer-focused approach while working in field environments.
Job Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Electrical technology education, electrical engineering coursework, military electrical experience, or prior substation field experience preferred.
Basic knowledge of power distribution, AC/DC voltage theory, electrical drawings, schematics, and troubleshooting preferred.
Exposure to relay testing, wire checks, Megger testing, Doble, Omicron, or similar test equipment is a plus.
Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow instructions.
Ability to work under supervision and meet deadlines in a field-based environment.
Must be willing to travel to customer sites, including interstate travel, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as needed.
Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime as needed.
Must be able to work in various weather and field conditions.
Valid driver’s license required.
Must be able to pass required background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle review.
