CNC Operator

The SARA, Inc. High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative full time CNC Operator to support research and development and rapid prototyping projects activities to transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The CNC Operator will work within the Rapid Development Group (RDG) team, consisting of other operators, machinists, and engineers.
Position Summary
The CNC Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and inspecting CNC mills and lathes used to manufacture precision components from aluminum, steel, stainless steel, plastics, and other engineering materials. This position supports both prototype and production manufacturing activities while ensuring parts meet quality, schedule, and safety requirements.
Core Responsibilities
- Operate CNC mills and/or lathes using established programs and setup documentation
- Manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, work instructions, and quality requirements
- Load and unload raw materials required for machining operations
- Monitor machine performance during production runs
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measurement equipment
- Verify dimensional compliance and document inspection results as required
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and basic GD&T requirements
- Identify machining, tooling, and quality issues and communicate concerns to supervision
- Maintain production schedules by efficiently operating equipment and minimizing downtime
- Assist with material preparation, cutting stock, deburring, cleaning, and secondary operations as required
- Maintain tooling, fixtures, and workholding equipment in a clean and organized condition
- Follow all safety, quality, and company operating procedures
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area
- Perform other duties, assignments, and responsibilities as reasonably assigned by management in support of departmental, programmatic, and organizational objectives
Equipment and Workplace Responsibilities
- Perform routine machine cleaning and basic preventative maintenance activities
- Keep tooling organized, identified, and stored properly when not in use
- Maintain machine cleanliness, including chip removal and end-of-shift cleaning
- Keep work areas free of unnecessary clutter and safety hazards
- Ensure personal tools and company equipment are properly stored and maintained
Required Qualifications
- 0 – 2 years of relevant machine/operations experience
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn CNC machining processes
- Familiarity with precision measuring equipment, including calipers and micrometers
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and email
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Self-starter with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Ability to operate with minimal supervision after training
- US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance
- May require Moderate physical effort, including standing, sitting, and use of hands while performing duties, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds
- Working environment is indoor, moderately loud, reasonably clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated; moderate physical hazards may exist
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 - 4 years of CNC machining or CNC operator experience
- Technical school, vocational training, or coursework related to machining, manufacturing, or mechanical trades
- Experience in a prototype, defense, aerospace, or high-mix/low-volume manufacturing environment
- Experience operating CNC mills and/or lathes
- Experience with Haas CNC controls
- Familiarity with Mastercam-generated programs and CNC setup documentation
- Experience reading engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 quality management system
- Experience performing first-article inspections
- Ability to operate with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and a self-starting attitude
- Forklift experience
- Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance

Pay Range
Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $20 to $30 (hourly USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees. Positions are on-site, unless indicated otherwise.
