Job Summary
The Mechanical & Plumbing Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for mechanical and plumbing systems in construction projects. This role involves analyzing project drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine labor, material, and equipment costs. The estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and manufacturer representatives to ensure competitive and profitable bids.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret project plans, blueprints, specifications, and contract documents
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- Conduct quantity take-offs and analyze labor, materials, and equipment requirements
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations
- Develop bid proposals, including scope of work, pricing, and schedules
- Maintain and update cost databases, historical data, and estimating tools
- Identify project risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving alternatives
- Collaborate with project managers and design teams to ensure accurate budgeting
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required
- Track and analyze bid outcomes to improve future estimating accuracy
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field experience
- 3–7+ years of estimating experience in mechanical and/or plumbing construction or related field experience
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, piping, and plumbing systems
- Strong knowledge in developing design-build conceptual estimates
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Trimble, Autobid, or similar tools)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously
