Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Consult Engineer Systems – Solution Train Engineer (26-256) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Huntsville, AL, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a key component of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, collectively monitor the battle, and dynamically control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals. C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations, both globally and regionally, to improve performance. C2BMC is essential for all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of missile defense systems.

The Solution Train Engineer (STE) is a recognized expert in scaling and tailoring Agile execution to shape how large, complex DoD development programs deliver capability. Responsible to the Chief Engineer yet operating with near self-supervision, the STE owns the Program Solution Train on C2BMC. It serves as a servant-leader to the Engineering Project Managers (EPMs) leading the program’s Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and Resource Management Areas (RMAs). The STE must synchronize ART/RMA development efforts to achieve near-term and long-range strategic program goals, driving the program’s “always ready to deliver” posture. The STE owns the program’s Agile processes and metrics, continuously identifying areas for improvement and challenging the current implementation's cost and weight. The STE serves as a prime spokesperson for C2BMC’s scaled Agile implementation and future direction — internally to senior leadership and externally to MDA and teammate companies — and is often instrumental in shaping new business pursuits where Solution-level execution credibility is a differentiator. Specifically, the STE owns the Program Solution Train and cadence, owns the program’s Agile processes, works with program leadership to tailor Agile implementation to best meet C2BMC needs, and serves as a servant-leader for the EPMs, acting as their interface to the Chief Engineer.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, prepare, and coordinate all C2BMC Planning events with internal and external stakeholders. Lead execution of all Planning events, including post-planning ceremonies
  • Ensure all ART/RMAs are performing in accordance with the program's Agile processes
  • When gaps are identified, work with the EPMs to establish alignment, boundaries, and constraints that enable conformance — without dictating how work is performed
  • Monitor Capability creation and work with Solution Chiefs to ensure they follow Agile processes
  • Own solution-level metrics — establish, implement, and utilize them to inform cross-ART improvement decisions (such as predictability, flow, quality, and program performance), all while satisfying the requirements of the program, customers, and the Program Company
  • Support the C2BMC Enterprise Release Manager in identifying, planning, and delivering C2BMC releases
  • Synchronize ART/RMA development activities to deliver high-quality, C2BMC program-level products that deliver customer value
  • Lead integration of work across ARTs/RMAs — facilitate cross-team communication and inter-ART/RMA dependency management, and support decisions that no single ART/RMA has the authority or visibility to make
  • Work with program management to define the requirements for the Agile workflow management tool and oversee all changes to ensure they support Agile and EV requirements
  • Serve as the customer interface for integrated planning, status, and process matters; act as the primary spokesperson for the program’s Agile execution model
  • Provide Program Management with integrated Solution-level cost, schedule, and technical visibility; support EVM cycles, ETC development, proposal/BOE input, and review readiness (TIMs, IETRs, CDRs) across ARTs
  • Coach and mentor EPMs in facilitation techniques, dependency management, escalation discipline, and metrics literacy; serve as a recognized mentor to the next generation of program-level leaders
  • Drive consistent DevSecOps adoption across ARTs/RMAs
  • At the CE's request, lead program improvement projects, such as implementing continuous planning — rolling-wave refinement of the Solution Backlog and ongoing capability decomposition across PI boundaries
  • Carry the vision for an empirical, iteration-based development posture across the Solution Train to increase the program’s Release-on-Demand readiness (“always ready to deliver”)
  • Challenge and reduce low-value processes — coordinate with the customer to align process intent with low-cost alternatives that replace heavyweight, high-cost methods; measured by reductions in process cycle time, document count, or ceremony overhead without loss of compliance or customer insight
  • Supporting capture and proposal efforts where Solution-level execution is a differentiator

Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering (preferred), Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 16 years of experience; or a Master’s degree (preferred) in a STEM-related field with 14 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related discipline with 12 years of relevant work experience
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time for business needs
  • Experienced and recognized expert in large-scale Agile program execution within the corporation
  • Demonstrates outstanding ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness
  • Experience communicating with senior corporate and government management
  • Proven ability to work independently to uncover and resolve issues related to the development and implementation of operational programs
  • Work is evaluated only by the effectiveness of results achieved over a long-term horizon

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering
  • Graduate Certificate: Model-Based Systems Engineering (Ex, Stevens, Caltech, UCSD, USC, GWU, INCOSE cohort, etc.)
  • Certification: INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) Certification
  • Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Advanced (OCSMP - MBA)
