DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a technical position that involves the operation of high-pressure boilers under the immediate supervision of a Stationary Engineer who has charge of the shift in a large plant; the Assistant Engineer III may operate a smaller plant on an assigned shift with no immediate supervision. The work includes routine operation, maintenance, and cleaning of boilers and auxiliary equipment, and operation and maintenance of H.V.A.C. equipment. The employee reports directly to and works under the direct supervision of an Assistant Engineer Stationary Grade I or Grade 11, who inspects work for conformance with standards. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed, although not listed.)
- Operates one or more boilers in a facility utilizing coal, gas, and/or oil, and with or without mechanical firing equipment
- Hand fires or loads the hopper of the automatic stokers
- Observes panels of gauges and meters, and adjusts controls for fans, fuel, water pumps, fuel pumps, and similar duties
- Operates the water column and boiler blowoffs regularly. Inspects and cleans fire and flues
- Removes ashes by hand or mechanically
- Operates and assists in the maintenance of coal handling equipment
- Oils, adjusts, and maintains auxiliary boiler equipment, including pumps, stokers, and fuel supply systems
- Assists in the service and repair of boilers and related equipment and systems; maintains cleanliness in the work area
- Operates H.V.A.C. equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the methods and practice of operating high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment; working knowledge of high pressure boiler operating safety precautions; working knowledge of the tools, methods and practices of high pressure boiler maintenance; skill in control of steam; skill in the use of tools employed in making repairs to boilers, pipes and valves; dependability; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Required Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must currently hold Monroe County Assistant Engineer Stationary Grade III title or meet the minimum qualifications below to be hired as a provisional employee.
Graduation from high school or the possession of an equivalency diploma, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment.
NOTE: Where education is lacking, experience in any of the following areas may be substituted on a year-for-year basis:
- (A) Operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam and refrigeration lines;
- (B) Operation of a refrigeration plant;
- (C) General building maintenance in a related skilled trade (i.e., pipe-fitting, electrical work, millwright, masonry, carpentry, general mechanical repair ONLY).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Third-Class Stationary Engineer license issued by the Board of Stationary Engineers.
Depending on the position duties, candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm
Salary: Starting annual salary of $53,098.45.
