Our Story

The West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) is a community‐based organization whose mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with supportive services within a residential setting which enhances the independence and dignity of each person. WSFSSH develops, manages, and provides housing for low‐ income older persons, many of whom live with mental illness and/or have experienced homelessness.

Position Description

Under the supervision of the Food Service Manager the Cook I will be responsible for the preparation, serving, and clean-up of meals.   

This is a full-time position (5) days a week on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Work with team members to prepare and create meals following standardized recipes provided by the Dietitian.
  • Document temperatures of food, freezer, and refrigerators as required. 
  • Follow proper portion and serving guidelines provided by the Food Service Manager.
  • Assist in accepting food deliveries and putting deliveries away following all NYC Department of health regulations
  • Distribute meals to the residents adhering to all food safety guidelines, proper food temperatures, no salt added, no sugar added as stated in the DOH food standards.
  • Responsible for cleaning the work area, equipment, kitchen, storage, and dining area.
  • Follow all food safety procedures outlined by NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • Meet with supervisors on a regular basis to discuss food service.
  • Assist in the monitoring of dining room during meals. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Cover for Cook II when needed.
  • Assist in the clean-up of all food service areas when needed this includes dish washing and trash removal.

Other

  • Work as a member of a team to establish and maintain elevated level of care and respect for and communication with residents.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Share information about resident progress, needs, and problems with appropriate staff.
  • Attend training sessions and conferences as required for enhancement of job skills.
  • Implement emergency procedures, as necessary.

Required Skills / Abilities

  • Previous experience in a commercial kitchen  
  • Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals to residents  
  • Ability to follow kitchen procedures and protocols 
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills  
  • Excellent organizational ability, time management and interpersonal skills  
  • Team focused and ability to work effectively with others as part of a team  
  • Desire or interest in working and supporting our senior residents 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED, or a combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 6 months as a Kitchen Assistant or Dishwasher
  • Experience working in kitchens serving twenty persons or more
  • Active food handler’s certification from the City of New York

Physical Requirements

  • Extended periods of standing
  • May require bending, pushing, pulling, or lifting (up to 25lbs.)
