The Welder I is an entry level welding position working under the daily direction of other senior welders. A position responsible for setting up and operating welding equipment/jigs/tools to join metal components and/or fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products which sometimes may include assembly of final product and ancillary support functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze drawings, specifications, or work orders to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
- Cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints.
- Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
- Adjust electric current and timing cycles of resistance welding machines to heat metals to bonding temperature.
- Align and clamp work pieces together, using rules, squares, or hand tools, or position items in fixtures, jigs or vises.
- Clean equipment parts, joints, and work pieces using chemical solutions or cleaning compounds.
- Connect hoses from torches to regulator valves and cylinders of oxygen and specified gas fuels.
- Cut carbon electrodes to specified sizes and shapes, using cutoff saws.
- Examine seams for defects and rework defective joints or broken parts.
- Grind, cut, buff, or bend edges of work pieces to be joined to ensure snug fit, using power grinders and hand tools.
- Guide torches and rods along joints of work pieces to heat them to brazing temperature, melt braze alloys, and bond work pieces together.
- Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Within the scope of the job requirements, will be required to adhere and comply with state law, the Company ISO Quality Program and procedures, Company policies and Safety and Environmental Regulations.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Welding Certification from a specialized training or technical school preferred.
- Working knowledge of various machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and be able to deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
- Must be able to successfully perform an on-site welding & fabrication skills assessment test.
- Must possess ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
The physical demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Employees must possess the ability to work in a production environment.
Must possess the ability to quickly adjust controls, see details at close range, respond quickly to signals, and quickly move hands with arms to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Must have hearing and speech to communicate in person in a noisy environment, before groups and over the telephone. Standing in work areas and walking between work areas will be required. This position requires an employee to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb or balance, reach, push, and pull. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds without assistance.
