Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine's faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day. The Department of Internal Medicine is a top-tier department with world-renowned faculty and staff.

A full time Sr Research Associate staff position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Frank McCormack in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. This position will conduct experimental research work in genetic interstitial lung disease to design and implement basic experiments. The position will also manage all laboratory processes including all supply ordering, animal management and husbandry, equipment maintenance and purchase, and IACUC protocol and amendments. Management duties include lab training and oversight to orient and mentor staff personnel, and all laboratory trainees.

Encompasses individuals who have a high level of competency in research but may not have an independent research program.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate research studies in the disciplines of life sciences, social sciences, environmental sciences, or public health.
  • Make independent contributions to projects and studies based on professional training and experience.
  • Perform statistical and graphical analysis of data, interpret data and assist in judging validity of data.
  • Independently decide how to solve issues/problems and rely upon their own resources to resolve the issue.
  • Contribute to the collective team effort.
  • May establish test controls, criteria and research standards.
  • May design of complex data processing systems to analyze research data.
  • Accomplish assigned results for project/studies, or for significant aspects of larger, complex assignments.
  • Serve as a seasoned level researcher and may act as a mentor to junior-level research staff.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in basic sciences.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in lab and staff management.

  • Special skills that are desirable include human and mouse lung organoids, iPSC reprogramming and differentiation, CRISPR-Cas9 editing, flow cytometry, RNA, DNA and protein methodologies, immunofluorescence and microscopy, animal surgery, mouse colony maintenance and genotyping, cell culture, maintenance of laboratory space and data, mentor to residents, fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.
