Accounting Specialist

We are looking for an Accounting Specialist to support core accounting operations for a team in Washington, District of Columbia. This contract opportunity with permanent potential is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable managing day-to-day financial activities while helping maintain accurate records and reporting. The person in this role will contribute to transaction processing, account balancing, and month-end support in a fast-paced office environment.

Responsibilities:
• Process vendor invoices, review payment documentation, and help ensure accounts payable activity is completed accurately and on schedule.
• Prepare and record journal entries to support routine accounting transactions and maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
• Reconcile bank accounts and investigate discrepancies by coordinating with internal records and supporting documentation.
• Assist with the preparation of financial statements and related reports by organizing data and verifying account balances.
• Support daily accounting operations by maintaining financial records, tracking transactions, and following established controls.
• Collaborate with the Comptroller and other team members to resolve accounting issues and improve the accuracy of reporting.
• Contribute to month-end and periodic close activities by reviewing entries, reconciling accounts, and organizing backup materials.

Qualifications:

• Experience supporting accounts payable processes and other core accounting activities.
• Working knowledge of journal entries, account reconciliation, and general ledger maintenance.
• Ability to prepare or assist with financial statements and related accounting reports.
• Proficiency in reconciling bank accounts and researching variances independently.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks accurately and meet deadlines.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with accounting leadership and staff.
• Prior experience in an accounting clerk, staff accountant, or similar accounting support role.

Compensation

$20.90-$24.20 Hourly
