Core4ce is seeking an experienced Clinical Terminologist to support the Integrated Healthcare Transformation (IHT) initiative within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The Clinical Terminologist will serve as a subject matter expert in healthcare terminology, semantic interoperability, and clinical informatics, supporting the development and maintenance of standardized clinical data models and terminology mappings. This role requires a strong clinical background combined with deep expertise in terminology standards, ontology development, metadata management, and healthcare interoperability frameworks. The successful candidate will help ensure that clinical and benefits-related information is accurately represented, exchanged, and utilized across enterprise healthcare systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize clinical terminology mappings and information models that support interoperability across healthcare systems and applications.
  • Map clinical and benefits-related concepts to industry-standard terminologies, including SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, FHIR, and other standards based on specific use cases and business requirements.
  • Design and maintain semantic infrastructure components, including metadata repositories, ontology models, controlled vocabularies, and terminology services.
  • Develop and manage domain-specific value sets, ensuring alignment with evolving clinical terminology standards and organizational requirements.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and implement updates to terminology standards and ensure appropriate incorporation into enterprise terminology management processes.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, informaticians, business stakeholders, and technical teams to define, model, and standardize healthcare data elements.
  • Support healthcare interoperability initiatives by ensuring consistent semantic representation across clinical systems, applications, and data exchanges.
  • Utilize terminology management tools to perform concept mapping, value set management, terminology maintenance, and semantic analysis.
  • Analyze clinical workflows, business processes, and use cases to identify terminology requirements and develop appropriate semantic solutions.
  • Participate in data governance and terminology governance activities to ensure compliance with enterprise standards and best practices.
  • Provide expertise in ontology development, metadata management, and semantic modeling to support healthcare modernization efforts.
  • Develop documentation, standards, procedures, and implementation guidance related to terminology management and interoperability.
  • Support quality assurance activities by validating terminology mappings, data definitions, and semantic models.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, disability specialists, allied health professionals, and benefits personnel, to ensure accurate representation of clinical and business concepts.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Master's degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Clinical Informatics, or a related field.
  • Certification in Informatics is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical terminology management, semantic interoperability, healthcare informatics, or related disciplines.
  • Clinical background as a physician, nurse, pharmacist, or other allied health or healthcare-related professional.
  • Demonstrated expertise in healthcare terminology standards, including SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, FHIR, and other applicable interoperability standards.
  • Experience developing terminology mappings, semantic models, ontologies, metadata structures, and value sets.
  • Proficiency with terminology management tools and terminology services platforms.
  • Experience maintaining terminology content and implementing updates based on new or revised industry standards.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data standards, interoperability frameworks, and clinical information systems.
  • Experience supporting semantic interoperability initiatives across complex healthcare environments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to translate complex clinical and technical concepts into standardized terminology models and data structures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), or other federal healthcare organizations.
  • Experience with disability-related terminology and benefits data standards.
  • Knowledge of healthcare data governance, master data management, and enterprise information architecture.
  • Experience supporting electronic health record (EHR) modernization initiatives.
  • Familiarity with HL7 standards, FHIR implementation guides, and healthcare information exchange frameworks.
  • Experience participating in terminology governance boards, standards organizations, or interoperability initiatives.
