Correctional Nursing Assistant

Position Description

This position is responsible for provision of basic nursing care and services that are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or physician in a correctional institution.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Perform patient-specific care tasks such as assisting with hygiene, linen changes, repositioning, ambulation, and feeding. Measure and record vital signs, blood glucose levels, and weights; promptly report abnormalities to the primary nurse.
  • Conduct EKGs as needed and report any changes in skin integrity or signs of pressure injury.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment by checking and replacing sharps containers, monitoring refrigerator temperatures, passing ice, and assisting with patient meals. Clean and calibrate glucometers and report any unsafe or unsecured equipment or environmental hazards.
  • Assist with supply management by restocking items under the guidance of the Charge Nurse, monitoring inventory, and rotating stock to ensure items remain within expiration dates.
  • Follow infection control protocols by ensuring proper equipment storage, cleaning shared spaces such as the break room and nurses' station, and assisting with patient room cleaning.
  • Take initiative in supporting the care team, including assisting nurses during emergencies and volunteering to help in other areas as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support efficient unit operation and high-quality patient care.

Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma.
  • Completion of a nursing assistant training course OR six months experience as a nursing assistant OR Completion of a Patient Care Technician Course.


Preferred Qualifications

Current CPR certification.
