We are seeking a highly skilled Telecommunications Access Engineer to design, deploy, and optimize our "last-mile" access networks. In this role, you will be responsible for the architecture and capacity of the network edge, ensuring seamless connectivity from our core infrastructure to the customer premises. You will work extensively with e.g., GPON, XGS-PON, DOCSIS, or Fixed Wireless and serve as the technical authority for access network hardware and provisioning standards.

What you’ll do

Network Design & Deployment: Design, plan, and deploy access network infrastructure, including Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), [DSLAMs / CMTS / wireless base stations], and edge routers.

Technology Evaluation:*Test, validate, and integrate new access technologies and customer premises equipment (CPE) in a lab environment before field deployment.

Capacity Planning: Monitor access network utilization, analyze traffic trends, and execute capacity upgrades to prevent congestion and maintain service level agreements (SLAs).

Tier 3 Support & Troubleshooting: Act as the highest escalation point for complex physical layer, Layer 2, and Layer 3 routing issues affecting the access network.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Outside Plant (OSP) engineering, field technicians, and core network teams to ensure seamless integration between the fiber plant and active electronics.

Automation & Provisioning: Develop and maintain standards, templates, and scripts to automate device provisioning, configuration backups, and network monitoring.
 
 
 
Pay range is $50-$60 an hour depending on experience

What you’ll need

  • To be 18 years of age or older
  • Authorization to work in the United States for this company
  • High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or relevant work experience
  • Valid state driver's license (cannot be Provisional), including an acceptable driving record
  • At least two years related experience and/or training

 

Required Qualifications
 
Access Technologies: Strong hands-on experience with access protocols and architectures, specifically GPON / XGS-PON / Active Ethernet / DOCSIS 3.1/4.0 / Fixed Wireless Access (FWA).

IP Networking: Solid understanding of Layer 2/3 protocols, including VLANs, STP, OSPF, BGP, IPv4/IPv6 subnetting, and multicast.

Hardware Proficiency: Experience operating and configuring access equipment from vendors such as Nokia, Calix, Adtran, Cisco, Juniper, or Ciena.

Analytical Skills: Deep knowledge of network monitoring and troubleshooting tools (e.g., Wireshark, SNMP monitoring platforms, optical power meters).
 
Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Networking, or related field.
 
Certifications: Industry certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, JNCIA/JNCIS, or MEF CEC.

Network Automation: Familiarity with scripting and automation tools (Python, Ansible, Netmiko) to streamline network operations.
