Position Summary:
The Theology Librarian contributes to development and delivery of strategic, high quality, virtual and in-person services to advance teaching, learning, research, and scholarship. Responsible for outreach, education, research support and library resources in the theology and religious studies department, the classics program, and others as assigned as a member of the Library’s Research Services & Scholarly Engagement Department. Participates in a collaborative model of general research support.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Resource and Service Development – Designs, delivers, and evolves innovative library services to advance research and scholarship. Works collaboratively to steward collections in assigned areas through selection, assessment, and deselection to support the changing academic needs of scholars.
  • Instruction – In collaboration with faculty, plans and conducts student-centered information literacy instruction aligned with curricular goals and objectives. Creates instructional resources to facilitate student and faculty research.
  • Research Support – Provides research consultations in assigned area(s) for faculty and students. Participates in collaborative model of general research support.
  • Outreach and Communication – Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff. Implements an active engaging outreach program to ensure awareness of library services among faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas. Communicates and advocates for community needs to other library staff.
  • Leadership – Leads or coordinates one or more services, programs, committees, and/or initiatives related to collections; instruction; outreach; reference; first-year experience; data services; distance learning; scholarly communications; business, humanities, social sciences, or STEM liaison services. Works collaboratively to set direction, manage projects, and educate library staff.
  • Professional Development – Engages in continual professional development to maintain and grow skills. Keeps current with trends and emerging issues in areas of responsibility and expertise. Shares knowledge with library staff.
  • Contributes to programs, goals, and strategic initiatives of the Research Services and Scholarly Engagement department, Falvey Library, Villanova University, and professional organizations, as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline with an interest in pursuing an alternative academic career in a library setting.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the research needs, information sources, and software/tools in assigned area(s).
  • Experience in providing research/project consulting in assigned area(s).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective training modules/tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for developing and maintaining relationships with diverse user communities.
  • Facility and independent exploration of appropriate technologies impacting higher education and academic libraries.
  • Collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries in service of user needs.
  • Independence and initiative in liaison work, including ability to be flexible and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong customer service skills including the ability to be responsive to service needs of constituents in a courteous and consistent manner
  • Interest in developing research-level collections in assigned area(s).
  • Clear understanding of discipline-specific research and scholarly communication practices.
  • Understanding of current issues, trends, and technologies impacting higher education and academic libraries.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Second advanced degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
  • 1+ years of experience in an academic library or equivalent experience with intensive area-related library research, preferred.
  • Experience in assigned area(s).
  • Knowledge of teaching principles and practices relevant to effective information literacy instruction.
  • Experience in developing research level collections in assigned area(s).
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking for up to 4 hours at a time, frequent bending and lifting, able to lift up to 15 lbs. of library materials while moving/walking, pushing, and pulling a book truck (4 wheels) of library materials weighing between 50 and 100 lbs., ability to climb several flights of stairs on an occasional basis.
  • The Theology Librarian may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to meet service needs for department.

Salary Posting Information:
This position falls within salaried grade 16 and the range is $71,700-89,600. The final salary will be determined with consideration of several factors including the selected candidate’s qualifications, department budget availability, market data, and internal equity.
