The Wall Street Journal is seeking a skilled strategist to lead the audience growth and maximize the impact of our most ambitious journalism.
As part of the broader content strategy team, you will be a key partner to our editorial leaders, translating data into insights to ensure that our most ambitious reporting not only engages our existing subscribers, but also acts as a lever in cultivating and converting future ones. You will be a vital voice in the editorial process, helping to shape storytelling across formats and platforms and set strategies to reach audiences and create conversation around our reporting.
This is a senior role in an audience-first newsroom that demands a unique blend of analytical rigor, creative thinking and strategic communication. The ideal candidate is equally energized by deeply reported journalism and boundary-pushing experimentation. You should be excited to work in a high-metabolism environment, ready to respond to major news events, and able to operate at a high level while balancing long-term projects with the day-to-day.
This role is based in our New York office and will report to the Director of Content Strategy.
You will:
- Develop and execute a pitch-to-publish, data-informed audience strategy for our enterprise and investigative journalism across the newsroom.
- Drive a culture of experimentation. Identify, test and scale new formats, distribution strategies and technologies to stay on top of industry trends and changing audience behavior and needs.
- Be responsible for interpreting data from various platforms, creating clear and actionable insights, building compelling narratives around audience behavior, and presenting recommendations regularly to editorial leadership and the broader newsroom.
- Work collaboratively across all the teams involved in our most ambitious journalism, from visual storytelling and audio/video to promotion and distribution teams.
- Serve as one of the newsroom's leading experts on audience best practices, developing new opportunities and methods for teaching, training and mentoring.
You have:
- 7+ years of experience in a digital media environment, including some combination of news strategy, editing or reporting.
- Experience working with investigative journalism.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to find insights from data; create an easy-to-understand narrative; and deliver a plan to address the findings. Experience with data analysis and reporting tools is a must.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You must be able to present strategic recommendations and data-driven insights clearly and persuasively.
- A track record of building and maintaining strong working relationships with reporters and editors and a proven ability to influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.
- A passion for news and a keen understanding of the evolving digital media landscape, specifically for a subscription-based business.
- A self-starter mindset and the initiative to identify challenges and opportunities, alongside possible solutions that you could implement.
- Strong interest in or knowledge of business, finance, economics.
To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter explaining how you would approach the job by Friday, July 10th. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
