How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

Pharmacy Automation Technician
This Pharmacy Automation Technician position supports inpatient pharmacy operations across Carilion Clinic's system of inpatient pharmacies, including a 718-bed Level 1 Trauma Center with a NICU and Children's Hospital. Technicians in this role are essential members of the healthcare team and directly contribute to safe, timely medication access for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.

Serving as Omnicell Administrators, technicians in this role are responsible for the implementation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of Automated Dispensing Cabinets throughout inpatient units. They maintain Central Pharmacy Workflow and Controlled Substance Workflow within the Omnicell system, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency across all supported facilities. Technicians receive advanced Omnicell training to develop the expertise necessary to effectively manage and troubleshoot these systems at a high level.

A core function of this position is providing system-wide support to Carilion Clinic's inpatient pharmacies, including on-call coverage to ensure uninterrupted automation operations. Technicians are responsible for optimizing automated dispensing cabinet performance by managing medication profiles — adding and removing medications and establishing appropriate par levels — leveraging advanced utilization analytics to drive data-informed decisions that improve efficiency and support patient care.

Success in this role requires excellent customer service and service recovery skills, as technicians work directly with nurses, anesthesia providers, and clinical staff to resolve automation-related issues and minimize disruption to patient care. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities are essential, as technicians must quickly assess and address complex technical and operational challenges in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

This position is ideal for a technician who thrives in a dynamic, system-wide role, is comfortable with advanced technology, and demonstrates a proactive approach to problem solving. Integrity, accountability, and attention to detail are essential, as the role requires consistent adherence to policies, accurate documentation, and an unwavering commitment to patient safety.
