Department Overview
The Laboratory of Immunogenetics and Transplantation (LIT) is the support laboratory for the local transplant programs which include the Oregon Health & Science University transplant programs (kidney, heart, pancreas, liver and bone marrow), the VA transplant program (kidney), the Legacy Health Systems combined transplant programs (kidney & pancreas), and the Providence heart transplant program. In addition, the LIT provides support for regional and national transplant programs.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide support services to the technical staff such as specimen processing, aliquot of samples and subsequent storage of samples, billing, reagent preparation, stocking supplies/inventory, QC of reagents, equipment QC and maintenance and cleaning and sterilization of laboratory glassware.
Function/Duties of Position- Sample Log-in and ordering appropriate tests based on current testing algorithm using Histotrac (HLA database) and EPIC
- Communicates with clients via phone, TEAMS messaging and email
- Sample processing and aliquoting
- Billing to multiple Industrial Accounts using Epic System
- Long-term storage of serum samples
Perform quality control checks on equipment, prepared reagents, water sterility, temperature checks, pipette check, thermocycler QC as assigned
Monitor temperature in the laboratory via Aeroscout monitoring system
Initiate appropriate corrective action(s) if indicated
Update procedures, and job aids as needed
Wash and sterilize glassware; clean and disinfect work areas and centrifuges
Required Qualifications
- A Certificate or associate degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician training program; OR
- Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant training program which includes 45 credit hours in chemistry or biological science, plus one year experience in a clinical laboratory; Medical Lab Assistant certification preferred (CLMA(AMT)or equivalent); OR
- Forty-five credit hours of college level chemical or biological courses and two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory; Medical Lab Assistant certification preferred (CLMA(AMT) or equivalent).
Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Competencies):
- General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, and safety.
- Skill in handling of laboratory specimens, record keeping, sterile technique, and laboratory equipment.
- Skill in using several different computer programs including Word, Excel, or other similar applications, dedicated LIS (HIS)
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately and operate and maintain standard lab equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate performance of job duties to trainees.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of clients including providers, healthcare personnel, laboratory staff and patients, and maintain a customer service focus at all times.
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines, to adjust to rapidly changing priorities, to communicate and apply problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize and maintain laboratory inventory and supplies.
- Ability to accurately weigh chemicals and prepare reagents.
- Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science or BS in Medical Technology
- Two years’ experience as a clinical laboratory assistant
Additional Details
The work schedule is dayshift, Monday-Friday. Travel is not required. The employee will be working with human tissues and body fluids; possible exposure to carcinogens, toxins and/or biohazards typically found in a clinical laboratory setting; wearing gloves and other personal protective equipment for long periods; experiencing occasional temperature control problems in building.
