Senior Nutritionist - SON Combest Diabetes Education Program

Position Description

This position is responsible for providing nutritional assessment, counseling, and education to patients and their families and for maintenance of pertinent information on nutrition for patient, medical staff, resident and student use. Work is performed primarily in the clinic setting, and employees function as part of the health care team. Work may require patient home visits.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Provide nutritional and diabetes education and services to patients of the TTUHSC SON Combest Wellness Center.
  • Provides nutritional assessment to create individual healthcare goals and education plans for patients.
  • Provides appropriate interventions to patients referred by primary care providers.
  • Conducts individual and group education for weight loss, diabetes, stress management, and mindfulness.
  • Provides individual and group educational activities to patients and delivers mental health services.
  • Collaborates with patients to develop an individualized program of health promotion and self-management goals.
  • Educates patients about health care and treatment options, programs, and resources.
  • Initiates coordination, scheduling, and delivery of diabetes education services.
  • Participates as an active member of the inter-professional collaborative practice team (IPCP).
  • Ensures compliance with specialty area licensing Board, TTUHSC policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Meets patient data entry timelines in the EHR (Electronic Health Record) system prescribed by the institution and department.


Occasional Duties

  • This position may be required to conduct specialty training, which may require travel.
  • Attend conferences or additional training.
  • Build a networking structure for marketing within the community.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nutrition from an approved accredited university. Two years' experience in a clinical setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Certified diabetes educator credentialed.
  • Have experience providing educational classes.
