Sr. Accountant
Exciting opportunity for a Sr. Accountant to support financial operations and drive accounting initiatives within housing and real estate in Norfolk, Virginia. This role oversees accounting activity across multiple funding structures, prepares accurate financial reporting, and helps maintain strong control over cash, investments, and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical ability, public-sector accounting knowledge, and a track record of guiding audits, reconciliations, and budget support activities.
Responsibilities:
• Manage advanced accounting activities for redevelopment programs and related projects, including recording transactions, maintaining ledgers, and preparing financial statements for a range of funding sources such as grants, loans, bonds, contracts, and subsidies.
• Review financial information for assigned programs, identify variances or irregularities, and deliver clear analysis that supports informed operational and financial decisions.
• Oversee cash management and investment-related accounting by tracking balances, recording activity, monitoring trends, and coordinating with banking and financial institution partners.
• Prepare journal entries, month-end and year-end close items, and account reconciliations to ensure the general ledger remains accurate and audit-ready.
• Support internal and external audit activities by organizing documentation, assisting with audit planning, responding to information requests, and helping resolve accounting questions.
• Contribute to budget development by compiling financial data, performing supporting analysis, and assisting with projections for programs and projects.
• Process and reconcile tax-related documentation, including standard and specialized reporting forms, while verifying supporting identification and payment data.
• Coordinate accounting work with internal teams and program stakeholders to ensure timely reporting, proper transaction handling, and compliance with applicable financial requirements.
• Monitor project and program financial performance, maintain detailed records of receipts and disbursements, and help address discrepancies through timely corrective action.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field with a strong accounting concentration.
• At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a lead or senior-level accounting capacity.
• Demonstrated experience with month-end close, general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and detailed account reconciliation.
• Strong background in bank reconciliations, audit preparation, and financial reporting within public-sector or similarly regulated environments.
• Working knowledge of budgeting processes and financial analysis used to support program or project planning.
• MUST HAVE experience with housing, public-sector, or HUD-related programs. Experience with section 8 funding environments is strongly preferred.
• Ability to analyze complex financial data, identify discrepancies, and communicate findings clearly in written and verbal form.
Compensation
