Labor & Employment
Responsibilities:
• Partner with Human Resources and academic leadership to provide day-to-day legal guidance on workforce issues involving represented and non-represented employees, including part-time faculty union matters.
• Counsel internal stakeholders on grievances, bargaining-related questions, information requests, and other labor relations issues arising under collective bargaining obligations.
• Advise on employee classification, compensation, workplace policies, discipline, terminations, leave administration, and accommodation matters to support compliant employment practices.
• Lead or support internal investigations and administrative proceedings, including preparation for hearings and response strategies for employment-related claims.
• Oversee employment disputes managed by external counsel, offering strategic direction on litigation, discovery, motion practice, and case resolution.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a range of legal documents, including employment-related agreements, business contracts, and procurement-related letters of agreement.
• Provide legal analysis on regulatory and operational matters affecting the organization, including facilities issues, privacy considerations, student-facing concerns, and intellectual property questions where needed.
• Conduct legal research and translate statutes, regulations, and case law into practical recommendations that align with federal, state, and local labor and employment requirements.
Qualifications:
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. • At least 7 years of legal practice experience, with substantial exposure to labor relations and employment law. • Demonstrated ability to advise in both unionized and non-union workplace settings. • Active attorney license required; Illinois bar admission or the ability to practice effectively in Illinois is strongly preferred. • Experience handling investigations, administrative matters, and employment-related disputes. • Strong drafting, negotiation, legal research, and client advisory skills across contracts and workplace policies. • Working knowledge of labor and employment compliance requirements, including equal employment opportunity considerations. • Prior experience supporting higher education or similarly complex institutional environments is preferred.The pay range for this position is $55 to $70. Benefits available to contract/contract professionals, include medical, vision, dental, and life and disability insurance.
