What You Will Do
This position is an Intern level Career Counselor. The Career Counselor Intern will be actively training with and being supervised by a designated Career Counselor in the unit. Duties the Intern will be trained on include: Counseling, Career Exploration, Career Preparation, and Job Search.- Counsel individuals and groups in various phases of the career development process.
- Provide assistance to students with identifying and overcoming barriers to selecting major and determining career direction.
- Assist with decisions relating to personal and career goals. Administer and interpret career assessments' to individuals and groups.
- Assist with writing cover letters, resumes, thank you letters, graduate school applications, job applications, and all other forms of business correspondence related to job search.
- Teach networking skills, interviewing skills, and effective internship and full-time job search strategies to individuals and groups.
- Discuss effective use of career and campus resources. including informational interviewing, print and on-line materials, Cougar Jobline, career fairs and other events, departmental Co-op and internship transcript recognition availability, professional attire, and social media.
- Conduct presentations and workshops on a variety of career-related topics.
Please note that the salary is dependent upon Master's degree completion.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
-Pursuing a Master's degree in counseling, college student personnel, psychology or related degree; course work should include foundations or psychological measurements and the measurement of interest and personality with degree conferral within 6 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- National certification in administering and interpreting the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Interest in working with students with disabilities and student veterans
- Demonstrated experience with one-on-one unsupervised career planning appointments
- Demonstrated experience writing, critiquing and reviewing student resumes
- Ability to present in large and small group settings
- Event planning or project management experience in career services
- Familiarity with Career Services databases (12Twenty, Handshake, Symplicity)
- Ability to create classroom presentations on career related topics using Power Point or other media
