We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to oversee the Accounts Payable function and support financial operations within a fast-paced construction environment. This role is responsible for managing AP processes, job cost accounting, vendor relationships, monthly close activities, and financial controls. The ideal candidate has a strong background in construction accounting, understands project-based financial management, and can lead process improvements while ensuring accuracy and compliance.

What you’ll do
Oversee daily Accounts Payable operations, including invoice processing, payment approvals, vendor management, and disbursements.
Supervise AP staff and ensure timely and accurate processing of subcontractor and vendor invoices.
Ensure accurate job cost tracking and support project managers with financial reporting and budget analysis.
Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including accruals and account reconciliations.
Support preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages.
Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures. Enforce and support SOX compliance.
Coordinate audits and provide requested documentation to external auditors.
Collaborate with project management and operations teams to resolve billing, vendor, and cost-related issues.
Assist with implementation and optimization of accounting systems and workflows.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements related to AP and construction accounting.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to streamline accounting operations and reporting accuracy.
What you’ll need
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
CPA strongly preferred
5+ years of construction accounting experience.
Strong knowledge of Accounts Payable, job costing, retainage, progress billing, and subcontractor management.
Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems such as Viewpoint, Sage 300/Timberline, Foundation, CMiC, or similar platforms.
Strong understanding of GAAP, SOX compliance and internal controls.
Advanced Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Additional Qualifications
Familiarity with AIA billing and percentage-of-completion accounting.
Experience leading AP automation or process improvement initiatives.
