CFO - Chief Financial Officer
About the role
A well-established personal injury firm operating on a 100% contingency model is seeking an experienced financial leader to step in on a fractional basis and build the financial infrastructure the firm needs to scale. Revenue is settlement-driven — lumpy, non-recurring — which means this role requires someone who genuinely understands cash flow in a project-based or contingency environment.
What you'll own (first 90 days)
- IOLTA / trust account reconciliation — get the accounts clean and keep them that way. Trust accounting experience is a must.
- Cash flow forecast — build a realistic 3–6 month model that reflects how contingency revenue actually works: settlement timing, pipeline, and case mix.
- Budget from scratch — the firm has no formal budget. You'll build the first one.
- Line of credit paydown plan — develop a clear, actionable plan to reduce existing debt obligations.
- Leadership presence — sit on the leadership team and translate financial position into plain language for non-finance leaders.
- Controller mentorship — actively develop the internal Controller; provide structure, direction, and professional growth.
Ongoing responsibilities
- Oversee and support IOLTA-to-operating account fund flows and disbursements
- Verify payout disbursements and reconciliations; ensure case expenses match entries in case management systems
- Partner with the Controller on monthly reporting, forecasting, and financial summaries
- Audit attorney bonus ledgers prior to approval; support payroll oversight
- Monitor firm operating expenses and identify efficiency opportunities
- Develop profitability metrics at the case and employee level over time
- Own and maintain cash flow and financial projection models
Schedule and logistics
- Wednesday onsite required
- Otherwise flexible on remote — San Antonio preferred, Central Texas acceptable
- Approximately 20 hours per week
Qualifications:
- Experience in contingency, settlement-driven, or project-based revenue environments where cash flow is lumpy and unpredictable
- Fractional or consulting finance experience — someone who knows how to get things done without a large team around them
- Legal industry background (nice to have, not required)
- Track record of building financial infrastructure at smaller organizations
- Comfortable presenting directly to executives and ownership; clear communicator with non-finance audiences
Must-haves:
- Trust accounting / IOLTA experience
- Hands-on cash flow modeling and forecasting
- Comfort working in a 17-person firm environment — no large infrastructure, no big team
- Onsite availability in the San Antonio / Central Texas area on Wednesdays
